Berlinde De Bruyckere: Romeu, 'my deer'

Sale price$55.00

Working with casts made of wax, animal skins, hair, textiles, metal, and wood, Berlinde De Bruyckere renders haunting distortions of organic forms. This publication presents a group of sculptures and drawings united by a concern with the human figure and the deer. A professional dancer, Romeu, served as De Bruyckere’s model, defining his movements and poses and developing her own sculptural choreography to create faceless, malformed, and fragmentary figures, alongside whom the deer appears as a majestic ambassador of nature. Photographs by Mirjam Devriendt show the fragile and vulnerable sculptures exhibited in an abandoned house in the old town of Ghent, while a text by Caroline Lamarche tells the story of the life and work of a sculptor and her urge to create.

BERLINDE DE BRUYCKERE

Working with casts made of wax, animal skins, hair, textiles, metal and wood, Berlinde De Bruyckere renders haunting distortions of organic forms. The vulnerability and fragility of man, the suffering body – both human and animal – and the overwhelming power of nature are some of the core motifs of De Bruyckere’s oeuvre.
