Dieter Roth: Paper

Sale price$18.00

‘Dieter Roth. Paper’ accompanied the exhibition of the same name, curated by the artist’s son Björn Roth at Hauser & Wirth in Zurich in 2018. The exhibition featured more than 70 examples of Roth’s Copy Books, produced from the late 1970s using a simple photocopier. By using the rapid and most readily available form of printing and copying, unhampered by constraints or the need to liaise with professional printers, Roth was able to quickly and easily express himself as his poetry and drawings took the form of these books.

This richly illustrated tabloid-format publication features a short text by Björn about the Copy Books, as well as Dieter Roth’s own ruminations about some of the works on view in the show, offering a unique window into the artist’s explorations and expansions of the medium of paper.

The Artist

DIETER ROTH

One of the most influential artists of the post-World War II period, Dieter Roth was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1930, to a German mother and a Swiss father, and died in Basel, Switzerland in 1998. Dieter Roth was an artist of an immense diversity and breadth, producing books, graphics, drawings, paintings, sculptures, assemblages, installations, audio and media works involving slides, sound recordings, film and video. He also worked as a composer, poet, writer and musician. He often collaborated with other artists, subverting the principle of authorship.
